The purpose of this article is to discuss basic neurological anatomy, physiology and assessment of a paediatric patient.
At the completion of this continuing education article you will be able to:
- understand the neurological differences that exist between adults and children
- Acknowledge some of the important paediatric developmental milestones and infant reflexes
- Identify the key differences between an adult and a paediatric neurological examination as outlined in the modified Glasgow coma scale
- Acknowledge when a paediatric neurological examination may be required in a clinical setting
- identify key markers of serious neurological impairment in the paediatric patient
